A、He was born on July 2, 1908 inBaltimore, Maryland, to a dining room steward and a school teacher. He was not born to wealthy parents. His education began in the public schools inBaltimore and he attended college at Lincoln University.After graduation from college, he entered Howard University Law School and graduated with honors at the age of twenty-five. Marshall began his law career inBaltimore and represented the poor and the weak in legal matters. The NAACP became aware of his legal abilities and asked him to join their staff. Marshall won thirty-two of the thirty-five cases he argued before the SupremeCourt during the time he worked with the NAACP. In 1961, he became a member of the United States SecondCourt ofAppeals. Four years later, he was appointed Solicitor General and was the first black to hold this position in the history of United States. Finally, he was appointed to the SupremeCourt of the United States in 1967 and was the first black to be appointed to the highest court in the United States. Marshall served in this position until his retirement in 1991. He died at the age of 84. Thurgood Marshall will be remembered for his involvement in the civil rights movement and for paving the way for much of the progress in civil rights.
